Lies in a barrier

“Build the wall” or “Mexico will pay for it!” How many times have you heard these two quotes in the past couple years? It has been something controversial, but ever since Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, this has been the most used chant causing hatred and racism on others.

He decided to make a border wall as his official promise to the American people. This ultimately sparked disagreement, but also agreement from others. He has continuously used racial slurs to blame Mexico and its innocent people of coming to the U.S. to harm its people and blaming them of only doing bad in this country. He thinks that a border wall will help solve every problem as well as mass deportation. The most racial and insulting thing Donald Trump has said in my opinion was said on June 2015. I felt and still feel insulted and bad for the way he brought judgements on innocent people. He said, “ Their bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” When I first heard this, I was like…”Did he just say that?” Shocking is probably the best word that can define that moment, especially when the results were announced.

This insulting quote was not only mentioned once by Trump, but it has been used multiple times in order to defend his idea for a border wall.  He also mentioned later that immigrants, “are killing us economically” which is a complete lie, since immigrants are the only ones willing to do the tough and “dirty” work out in the labor farms or fields picking the fruit out in the dangerous climate, receiving poor treatment, and low-wages. Disapproval and false claims are what I only hear through Trump’s quotes, because immigrants only come to this country for a better life, and strongly support the United States economy. Immigrants contribute over 10 billion dollars to the U.S. economy, and therefore help the U.S. strive positively.

This past Saturday, January 19, 2019, Donald Trump gave a proposal in order to reopen the government, which included, more receiving than giving from the president. He asked for: “$800 million for humanitarian crisis, $805 million for drug detection, 2,750 border agents and law-enforcement professionals, 75 new immigration judges, and $5.7 billion for a ‘physical barrier.’” In return, he would give only “3 years of extended protection for DACA (Dreamers) and would “allow immigrants who were covered through the Temporary Protection Status to stay in the United States.” Right away, many noticed that he asked for a lot, and would give very little in return.

“The wall” is not only a symbol for security, but also a symbol of separation and division for those who are in the other side of it. As history shows, Berlin’s wall has been a clear example that division occurs and the negative impacts it has had on the surrounding communities  which are more.

A temporary government shutdown has been in effect for almost a month now, all because Donald Trump has been persistent with the topic of the “wall.” He has not received the funds he has asked for, which are 5 billion dollars to construct it, because many are against the idea. According to NBC, about “800,000 federal workers are impacted by the government shutdown” and many people are currently without food stamps, governmental programs, and without their “paychecks.” Therefore millions of people are currently working for free, all because Trump continues to ask for the “wall.” Even those people who thought the wall would never affect them or those who were in favor of it are now reconsidering it, because of the government shutdown impacting them.

The border wall which Trump suggests is a “great idea” has the agreement from the Republicans and agree that is for a security concern, while the Democrats are strongly opposing the idea. Over the past months, more and more republicans are expressing disagreement with the president over the “wall” which has brought controversy suggesting that not everyone in the White House agrees with those ideals. Nancy Pelosi, the U.S. house speaker has expressed her support for border security, but does not agree that there should be a wall to do the job.

The border wall has become the most talked and political topic in today’s world that it has sadly brought injustice to a community through racism, false claims, and controversy.
